JACK Family Name History
The surname JACK is of baptismal origin. Surnames, also designated as family names, or alternatively a last name were added to a given, or baptismal name. This name was in many cases inherited and held collectively by members of a family group. Initially surnames identified one by connection to a family member foremost being the father, eg. John (son) Jack (son) etc. In this case the surname was given to one who was the son of John.
Early records of the surname Jack or a variant include John le Warner or Jackie le Warner of Norfolk who appeared in the Hundred Rolls in the year 1273. The Hundred Rolls, which until the 19th Century was a unit of English Government detailing the citizens of a given area. This system of local legal jurisdiction was introduced by King Edmund I (939-946 AD). To provide details which were used partly as a system to gather revenue for the crown. These records contain no less than 70,000 names.
Later records show that John de Blondec or Jakke de Bonder also appeared in the Hundred Rolls, as did Jacobus Amadur or Jakes Amadur of Lincolnshire in the year 1273.
Concerning family names records one of the most significant stipulations was introduced by the Council of Trent in the year 1563 when it was proclaimed that all parishes should keep detailed registers of all baptisms together with the names of the child and its forebears. This edict was the first, which ensured that systematic records were to be kept. From church records it was noted that William Jack married Elizabeth Davison at St. Georges Chapel at Mayfair in the year 1753. Also another marriage was recorded between John Tobias and Elizabeth Jacks at St. Georges Hanover Square in 1788.
